The Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and Green Chamber of the South hosted their third Sustainability Summit. There were some really great speakers/panels from Lee Peterson of the Reznick Group, Paul Diaz of Tree Sound Studios, Steve Cannon Gwinnett Environmental Hertage Center and Whole Foods. SEGreen was dismayed to hear a presentation from Jackson EMC where they presenrted an incredibly unstainable picture of energy. Even though they have a Green Energy program the focus was on why solar and wind doesn't work in Georgia and why nuclear is safe from earthquakes and tsunamis here in Georgia. Pretty astonishing stuff. Read from the bottom to top to read in order.

  • Green Community award goes to Gwinnett County
  • Green Save award goes to Corus 360
  • Gwinnett Tech just won the green reach award from GMCC
  • Sustainable Atlanta Hires Suzanne Burnes as Executive Director http://ow.ly/4U1WW
  • The life cycle for asphalt is 7 years and for pavers it's 50 years. Cool a new ecofact!
  • Porous paving is another feature of the center. GEH is a leading location to see large install for college students.
  • Gwinnett EH has the largest vegetative roof in the US. It's a little over an acre in size
  • Kids confuse the water feature as an actual waterfall. We need to get our kids outside more.
  • Heat island effect was limited and storm water management was included too.
  • Okay we are going to talk green roofs. Keeping trees which goes towards LEED points does make site prep a bit more challenging
  • Provide and supplement education for the Gwinnett County School System the third graders alone in Gwinnett total 75,000 kids
  • They also have 10 miles of trails. The vision started in 2001. #whoknew
  • Gwinnett Environmental Hertiage center has 700 acres! #wow
  • Okay next up is Steve Cannon, Gwinnett Environmental Heritage Center. Someone new for me to tweet : )
  • Okay Paul Diaz from Tree Sound Studios. This should get better now.
  • They actually just said that 100% renewable energy as a long term goal was unviable. #Really? Shame on you Jackson EMC!
  • It is actually insulting and anti-green. Sustainability planners vet your speakers before you let them speak on Sustainability. #jacksonemc
  • The reason I have been twitter silent is because we are listening to the worst presentation I have heard in a long time.
  • You and your business will immediately benefit from installing solar. #GA state law prohibits it from making it truly implementable.
  • #Government and Public Utilities serve us not the other way around.
  • #GA State legislature is changing and we have started to make some good progress.
  • Which is another untended benefit for going #solar.
  • Which is another untended benefit for going #solar.
  • We are getting an astonishing list of health issues that will be prevented with cleaner air.
  • #EPA announced a settlement with TVA in regards to clean air violations. You can read the article on Southeast Green : )
  • US is expected to become the largest solar market in the next couple of years.
  • #Solar is not a fad or bubble. The US ranked third for new solar last year.
  • Why is this important? Jobs, jobs, jobs
  • #GA is ranked 10th for solar generation but we rank 38th for implementation
  • #GA is one of the best locations for solar and yet we don't seem to know that in #GA
  • Solar is the strongest growth market in the country surpassing the telecommunications industry in the US
  • #GA Biomass is the richest location but there is not any new programs being moved off the planning table.
  • We have been told in GA that wind does not work unless it is in the mountains or coast. Not true.
  • US has 41,400 mw of wind installed and yet we have been told that it doesn't work.
  • Utilities can add wind without major adjustments to their infrastructure.
  • Wind Industry has added 35% of new utility scale energy in the last year. More than #coal and #nuclear combined.
  • I love this guy. He does not shy away from telling the truth.
  • Listening to Lee Peterson from Reznick Group. The Solar Tax Guru of #GA
  • I am here with my buddies from @PureGreenSoluti and @reapingnature
  • Okay get ready for the tweets! I am looking forward to hearing the panels
