DeKalb County Health Department was in full swing to support Food Day with a week's long celebration. They hosted a symposium where they screened Nourish and discussed their upcoming white paper which addresses the state of the food system in DeKalb. Very interesting stuff. Read from bottom to top to read in order.

  • DeKalb County School System is in its first year of their Farm to School program.
  • DeKalb needs to create a committee to identify land as potential urban farm. Anyone volunteers?
  • If every #GA resident would spend $10.00 on local produce it would create Millions of dollars of revenue for GA business.
  • Studies show that women who can use their food assistance income at farmers market will eat more fresh fruit and vegetables.

  • 17% of DeKalb lives in a food desert.

  • Comm. Kathie Gannon is delivering the County Commission proclamation to support Food Week. This program fits perfectly with Green Comm.
  • DeKalb has two grants to cultivate local farms and farmers markets. This helps community and economic development.
  • DeKalb has an increasing obesity rate. Total obesity rate is 30% + up from 25% from 5 years ago.
  • Listening to Dr. Elizabeth Ford, District Health Director, DeKalb County. She's awesome. DeKalb is lucky to have her.
