Virginia Transportation Funding Plan Will Unfairly Penalize Fuel-Efficient Clean Diesel Technology for Diesel Car and Truck Owners

Members of the Virginia House of Delegates were informed today that the proposed diesel tax disparity created by the transportation funding package would affect almost 250,000 diesel car and light duty trucks in Virginia by 2020.

In the letter to the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates and other members, Diesel Technology Forum Executive Director Allen Schaeffer explained the options now under final consideration will create an unfair and substantial disparity between gasoline and diesel fuel and as a result "directly penalizes Virginians who drive fuel-efficient clean diesel passenger vehicles and is a disincentive to investing in clean diesel cars in the future."

T. Clay Wood Elementary School in Nokesville, VA has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver Certification with the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI).  Opening in 2011, the 104,000-square-foot school shares a site with the county's 11thhigh school—Patriot High School.

Prince William County Public Schools (PWCPS) partnered with architects and engineers at Moseley Architects to tailor the two-story prototypical design originally created for Triangle Elementary School.  Intended to educate 850 students, the world class facility features state-of-the-art classrooms to engage students and inspire creativity and critical thinking. In an effort to provide a safe, positive, and responsible learning environment, PWCPS emphasized the importance of LEED Silver certification early in the design process.

USGBC Announces 2013-2014 Mark Ginsberg Sustainability Fellow

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) named Dr. Matthew Trowbridge, Assistant Professor, University of Virginia School of Medicine, as its 2013-2014 Mark Ginsberg Sustainability Fellow. Along with a generous grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the fellowship will support Dr. Trowbridge’s work to help develop health metrics for green building, among other key research initiatives.

The Mason School of Business at the College of William & Mary was recognized for being one of the nation's "10 Environmentally-Aware Business Schools," according to a ranking released by MBAPrograms.org.

The ranking cited a 2011 McKinsey & Company survey that found more companies are integrating sustainability principles that could improve processes, promote growth and value to their names beyond reputation alone. In short, green business is good business.

Norfolk Southern Plans $2 Billion Investment In Support Of Freight Rail Service, Safety, And Sustainability

 

Norfolk Southern Corporation plans to spend $2 billion in 2013 for capital improvements to its rail transportation network.

"Our capital plan will maintain the safety and quality of our existing franchise, improve service quality and performance, achieve operational efficiencies and productivity improvements, and support business growth," said Norfolk Southern CEO  Wick Moorman. "We continue to invest in the infrastructure, equipment, and technology necessary to provide the best possible service to our customers."
