Corporations quarrel over $380 million as delays, design changes mount; Fukushima changes will come later and at customers’ expense
A second U.S. nuclear power construction project is expected to receive a license within weeks, but a new document shows that the majority owner and contractors are arguing over who should pay the extra costs of at least 11 changes totaling over $380 million for two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. Extra charges at the V.C. Summer project in South Carolina include “unanticipated rock conditions” for the nuclear island’s foundation, design modifications for the shield building and structural modules, and persistent problems at a Louisiana facility where plant components are being fabricated.

$23 Million Project to Process Organic Waste into Green Energy
Three leaders in the renewable energy industry announced a teaming arrangement to construct and operate a state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion facility at the corner of Shop and Beltline Roads here in Columbia, SC.
The 48,000 Tonne per year, 3.2 MW, facility will begin construction under the supervision of W2E Organic Power, and will process organic waste, turning it into green natural gas for electric power production. CIYCOR, a worldwide renewable energy and construction company, is co-developer and financial partner. EISENMANN, a global engineering and advanced technology firm, is providing the anaerobic digestion technology and engineering.

The Public Service Commission of South Carolina (PSCSC) today approved an increase to electric rates for Duke Energy’s South Carolina customers.
The PSCSC accepted the settlement among Duke Energy Carolinas, the South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff, and Walmart Stores East.
“We’re pleased the commission approved the settlement, which strikes a balance between the economic challenges facing our customers and the company’s need to recover its capital investments,” said Catherine Heigel, president, Duke Energy South Carolina. “This decision enables the company to continue to make needed investments to deliver reliable energy to customers at competitive rates and address compliance with ever-increasing environmental regulations.”
