The City of Atlanta recorded the highest rate of increase in biking to work between 2000 and 2009—an impressive 386%, surpassing even bicycle standard bearer Portland, OR—according to a report released by the Alliance for Biking & Walking.
Yet according to American Community Survey data, just 0.8% of Atlanta residents are hopping on their bicycles to get to work. The dearth of infrastructure funding—only 1% of federal transportation tax dollars spent in Atlanta go towards bicycle and pedestrian projects—is largely to blame.
“A much greater investment is needed in biking and walking to increase active transportation,” says Jeffrey Miller, President/CEO of the Alliance for Biking and Walking. “The Benchmarking Report shows that biking and walking are smart and cost-effective solutions that will pay for themselves many times over in healthcare savings and impact on local economies.”

Midtown couple wins the SHINE Home Energy Makeover contest.
The City of Atlanta residential weatherization program that has provided thousands of dollars in rebates for qualifying home energy efficiency improvements has awarded a “home energy makeover” to one lucky Atlanta family. SHINE – Sustainable Home Initiative in the New Economy – launched a Home Energy Makeover contest in July 2011. Contracted through SHINE partners SawHorse, Vis Viva and Georgia Air Contractors, the work to be done on the home is valued at more than $22,000 and is projected to save the family more than $1,000 in annual utility costs.
Homeowners Lance St. Clair and Celise Kalke, together with their young daughter, are deserving winners in that they are a one-car family and clearly try to live an environmentally-sensitive lifestyle. “We love the historic character of our house, but have been looking for ways to improve its energy efficiency since we bought it four years ago,” said St. Clair. “We heard about SHINE and were excited when we learned about the contest, knowing it was a great opportunity to really transform our home.”

The Coca-Cola Company released its eighth systemwide Sustainability Report, titled Reasons to Believe. In the Company's effort to increase transparency across its broad sustainability platform, this year's Report was created using stakeholder feedback and, for the first time, follows the disclosure and reporting requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) to achieve a self-declared grade level "B+." With new digital tools available to more people, the report was also created in a unique format offering easier access from smart phones, tablets and other popular mobile devices. And, for the first time ever, its entire content is available exclusively online.
"Sustainability has been core to our business strategy for nearly 125 years," said Chief Sustainability Officer Beatriz Perez. "After receiving feedback from a variety of stakeholders, we decided to make some significant changes to our sustainability reporting efforts. In addition to increasing transparency within the content, we have taken a digital approach to make the report more user-friendly and accessible on a variety of mobile devices. As we continue to strengthen our sustainability efforts, we also will innovate the means by which we share our progress."
