Energy Code Compliance: Requirements for SFR in Georgia

A panel discussion on current and future energy code changes and how they will effect SFR construction

Green Building Council of the GAHBA is hosting a lunch and panel discussion on current and future energy code changes. Anyone who is interested in how these changes will affect future construction and renovations of homes, should attend. Panelists will include. Chris Laumer-Giddens, of LG Squared, Lance Beaton, of Vis Viva Energy & Service, Rick Logan, the Head Building Official for the City of Decatur, and Ryan Taylor, principal of Ryan Taylor Architects.


The event will take place at Southface Energy Institute at 241 Pine Street, Atlanta Ga 30308 from 11:30am to 1pm. Septerber 27, 2012. Tickets can be purchased on line at

The panelists will discuss current, upcoming, and future energy and building code requirements for residential construction in the state of Georgia and the Atlanta metro area. The panel will offer insight into the philosophy behind energy efficiency code requirements and will share their expertise on implementing these designs and requirements in the field.


Chris Laumer-Giddens is an Architect and Building Science Pro who specializes in designing buildings “as a system”. As an architect, energy pro, and former builder, Chris’ company LG Squared, Inc. brings architecture and building science together to create beautiful, high-performing and efficient home design.


Lance Beaton is co-owner and general manager of Vis Viva Energy and Services. Vis Viva provides HVAC and mechanical design and installation as well as building performance assessments and consulting. Lance’s deep knowledge of efficient mechanical systems and his extensive certification credentials lead Vis Viva’s focus on saving energy while improving the health and comfort of homes.


Rick Logan is head building official for City of Decatur. With over 17-years as a code official in Dekalb and City of Decatur and 25-years of general contracting experience, Rick is an Atlanta native and Georgia Tech engineer who knows Atlanta building codes inside and out. Rick’s expertise in building, implementing and enforcing building and energy codes offers great insight into how building and contracting professionals can make the most of today’s construction environment.


Ryan Taylor is founder of Ryan Taylor Architects, a Board member of the Atlanta HBA Green Building Council, and a member of the State Codes Advisory Committee. Ryan specializes as an owner’s advocate, providing architecture and sustainable design to their clients and partners. Ryan serves as the Architecture representative to the State Codes Advisory Committee, sharing his architectural insight into the development of new codes for the state of Georgia.
